Fishing Port Phillip Bay Over Easter With Jack Auld 2013

27 March 2013

Port Phillip Bay in particular the North West is in really good condition with plenty of different species on offer, this time of year while the water is still above 20c. So if you’re planning on getting out over Easter, good luck.

Off Werribee South, the whiting are still fishing - well, once you move about and locate them. Areas such as Point Cook out the front of the new marina getting built and Wedge Spit all holding patches of tasty King George Whiting. The size is also good, with fish up to 42cm caught this week, fresh mussels and squid being the best bait.

The squid have also shown up in very good numbers again all around the bay. Altona and Point Cook are holding good numbers of squid over both reef and shallow weed beds. The squid tend to hunt in packs, so once you hook up, really watch behind the hooked squid while bringing it to the boat and your mates should be able to drop their jigs in behind the hooked squid and get into the action also.

The snapper are still about and will start to feed up over the next month or so before they depart the bay and head offshore. As soon as the water temp drops they will bite really well. There have been fish caught off Ricketts this week and also deep off Carrum. The wreck area off Werribee South is worth a look all the way to Indented Heads along the 20m line. Just use your sounder and don't stop until you find some fish (arches) then give them a go.

Exciting news ahead for both myself & Haines Hunter with my New Haines Hunter Offshore model in the design process at the moment and is due to start getting built over the next couple of weeks. So stay tuned for a full report and build pics.

Have a safe and happy Easter,

Jack Auld
