Fishing Report From Gawaine Blake For Port Philip Bay

It’s getting closer to Xmas now and as the year closes, everyone’s minds switch to whiting, gummy sharks and offshore for kingfish, makos and the very tasty tiger flathead.

The whiting fishing in Westernport is the best I have seen, with not only numbers but quality fish too. It’s not uncommon to be getting personal limits of whiting for everyone on board of late. I’m mainly concentrating my fishing in the north arm, fishing depths of 3-7m along the edges of the banks and spits.

When targeting whiting, it may take a few moves to get them going but once located you should be able to get a good feed. The use of burley is crucial. I use pilchards, mussels and squid all mashed up in a burley pot that is lowered to the bottom via a rope.

Make sure you freshen this up or bring it up and give it a good shake from time to time to get the best results, best baits have been cocktails of either mussel and squid or pippi and squid.

The idea of the cocktail bait is if you miss the first bite, there is still a bit of squid left for them to come back to. I use the Californian squid cut into thin strips 5x30mm just hung off the hook behind your softer shell baits. I’m using an extended paternoster with either a Gamakastu size 6 worm hook or a Gamakastu size 6 shiner. Sinker-wise you will need 1.5-4 oz tear drop bombs for most of your general fishing on a 2-4 kg spin rod with 10-15 lb braid. My rod of choice is the Nitro distance spin.

Either tide has not mattered but I do tend to fish a little deeper on the run out I still have a few days available if you would like to do a guide with me on your boat, these guides are designed so you can learn how to further your boating knowledge and get the most out of your fishing. Whiting fishing is great fun for all the family and one of the best feeds you will get out of our bays, and great thing is, there is always a bycatch of yakkas, trevally and salmon, which make great gummy shark baits.
