Most trailerboats are pretty darn good these days, straight out of the box, but some get the formula of length, weight, height and underbody shape just perfect. The Haines Hunter 675 Enclosed Limited Edition is one of them, its performance surpassing excellence and entering the realm of absolutely exceptional when powered by a 350hp Yamaha.
The hull’s standard maximum rating is 250hp, which can be structurally enhanced to 300hp, and now a whopping 350hp for the Haines Hunter Special Vessel (HHSV) version I drove. With that extra 100hp it accelerated like a rocketship from go to ‘WHOA!’
Haines Hunter hull ‘secret’
One of the secrets to the 675 is what builder John Haber calls a “hoof” – a not-so-technical term for a slight swelling of the vee sections amidships. There’s also a rounded scallop where the chines meet. It’s remarkably quiet, thanks to the foam filling and glass-encapsulated timber stringer system.
The hardtop’s mass has been counter-balanced by additional weight below the floor to maintain the all-important centre of gravity. At rest we could have three people on one side, while underway there was no undue heel in side-on chop or hard turns.
Functional helm station
The steering wheel is well positioned to stand while driving, and there’s a sturdy footrest. A 16in screen dominates the dash and is flanked by a 12in to the side. The helm seat sits on a moulding with a tackle locker, while the passenger seat has a u-shaped frame to take a fridge, plus there’s the option of a rear lounge.
Between the helm seats is a 320lt underfloor killbox, twin live bait tanks are located in the transom with battery and tackle storage underneath, plus side pocket storage, a dive door and electric anchor winch all come standard.
Limited edition model
LTD niceties include Ultralon U-Deck flooring and black accents for the helm seats, gunwale rubbers and windscreen supports. Buyers have a choice of colours from prestige European car brands, with matching hardtop. The test boat added a pie warmer and a marine head as further luxuries.
Only 24 of the HHSV LTD 670 Enclosed models will ever see the light of day, each built to order and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. Add the offshore capabilities to the overnighting accommodation and you have a highly versatile, high-performance fishing rig that’s darn hard to go past – especially at its top speed of 46.4 knots in chop!
